Team Sharsheret’s triathletes will be competing in the Nautica/NYC Triathlon, on Sunday, July 18, 2010. Support our five triathletes: Linda Gerstel (New York City), Cheryl Lasher (Englewood, NJ), Gila Leiter (Teaneck, NJ), Joseph Lerner (Englewood, NJ), and Chani Teigman (Englewood, NJ). Cheer them on as they swim 1500m in the Hudson River, bike 40k along Manhattan’s West Side Highway, and run 10k through Central Park to the finish line. Sharsheret will present a free national teleconference, “The Impact of the Holocaust on Breast Cancer in Jewish Families Today,” Tuesday, July 14, 2010, 8:00 p.m. (EST). Panelists include Lital Keinan-Boker, MD, PhD, MPH, Faculty Member of the Faculty of Social Welfare and Health Studies, University of Haifa, Rifky Atkin, Sharsheret Link and Child of Holocaust Survivors, and Niecee Schonberger, MS, CGC, Genetics Program Coordinator, Sharsheret. Topics include the research study demonstrating a higher incidence of breast cancer among Jews living in Europe during the Holocaust, challenges of tracing family cancer histories destroyed during the Holocaust and concerns of Jewish women and families considering genetic testing for breast and ovarian cancer. There will be an opportunity for participants to pose questions to the panelists during the live question and answer session. The symposium explores the findings of the recent New York Breast Cancer Study that analyzed more than 1,000 women of Ashkenazi Jewish descent, and featured a question and answer session with an expert panel. Sharsheret welcomed patients, family members, and healthcare professionals to its second Symposium, "How Do We Care For Our Children? Issues for Women and Men Facing Breast Cancer," presented at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center's Hoffman Auditorium. The panel of experts included Rosalind Kleban (Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center), Peggy Anne Murphy (Cancer Care), and Ingrid Whitaker (Gilda's Club NYC). The panelists presented an overview of the needs of children affected by a parent's breast cancer diagnosis, and highlighted methods of addressing those changing needs. The Symposium was sponsored by the American Cancer Society, the North Jersey Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Cancer Care, Gilda's Club, and Hats of Hope.

Symposium: Breast Cancer and Fertility

Sharsheret and Fertile Hope welcomed more than 80 men and women to their first Symposium on the subject of breast cancer and fertility held at Weill Medical College of Cornell University on October 24th. The Symposium attracted breast cancer patients, family members, and health care professionals. Speakers included Dr. Zev Rosenwaks (Cornell), Dr. Kutluk Oktay (Cornell), and Dr. Ruth Oratz (NYU School of Medicine and member of Sharsheret’s Medical Advisory Board), as well as representatives from A T.I.M.E. (Torah Infertility Medium of Exchange), Resolve, American Infertility Association, Fertile Hope, and Sharsheret. Sponsors included American Cancer Society, Cornell Institute for Reproductive Medicine, Hadassah, John and Allison Danner, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation (North Jersey Affiliate), Resolve, Organon, Ferring Pharmaceuticals, Aventis Pharmaceuticals, and Hats of Hope. The Symposium addressed the effects of breast cancer treatments on fertility, fertility options before, during, and after breast cancer, and the effects of Tamoxifen on fertility.
