Sharsheret Supports was designed in response to the community leaders who have reached out to Sharsheret for assistance. The program includes:
-
Support Group Leaders Kit with guidelines for establishing a successful support group, generating attendance, publicity and marketing, events, discussion topics, and support group materials.
-
Jewish Women Facing Breast Cancer DVD” featuring interviews with the young women of Sharsheret exploring the culturally-sensitive concerns of Jewish women facing breast cancer, including genetic testing, religious ritual affected by breast cancer treatment (i.e., wig-wearing, traditionally associated with marriage in Orthodox Jewish communities; the use of the Mikvah/ritual bath post-surgery or during chemotherapy), and the role of spirituality in daily life with cancer and in healing.
-
Consulting Services affords the opportunity for local Jewish community groups (e.g., JCC’s, YMCA’s, Jewish Family and Children’s Service Agencies) to bring a Sharsheret representative to their community for additional support group training or to lead a support group.
Community leaders and volunteers who participate in Sharsheret Supports can benefit from Sharsheret’s expertise in the area of culturally-sensitive support. In addition, Sharsheret’s national program will save the resources that are currently expended researching how to begin a support group and collecting information about breast cancer and Jewish women at the local level.
