Dr. Ruth Oratz
Ruth Oratz is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at NYU School of Medicine, NYU Langone Health, where she practices and teaches. She is a medical oncologist at the NYU Perlmutter Cancer Center, specializing in the care of people with and at risk for breast cancer. Dr. Oratz has a particular interest in hereditary cancer syndromes and has been caring for families with cancer histories and involved in research since the discovery of the BRCA genetic mutations.
At NYU, Dr. Oratz is leading groundbreaking work as part of a team creating a “living biobank” of molecular models that will help researchers better understand cancer. This innovative project combines advanced laboratory tools with AI-based analysis to predict cancer risk, treatment responses, and resistance mechanisms. By linking patient histories with these models, Dr. Oratz’s team is building a powerful resource to guide prevention, improve patient care, and accelerate the development of personalized therapies for those at highest risk.
Dr. Oratz has been connected with Sharsheret since Sharsheret Founder Rochelle Shoretz A”H first had the idea to create an organization that would support young Jewish women with breast and ovarian cancer. Since the founding of the organization, Dr. Oratz has served as a medical advisor and a member of Sharsheret’s Medical Advisory Board, speaking locally, nationally and internationally. She has always been available to provide information and guidance about new challenges and about what’s on the horizon – preparing webinars ranging from how to deal with cancer treatment during the COVID pandemic to how GLP1 agonist drugs may impact cancer patients.
Dr. Oratz has also served as Chair of the Medical Advisory Board of Susan G. Komen, Greater NYC which co-sponsored the first Race for the Cure in Israel. She was on the National Board of the YWCA, USA and was named “Physician of the Year” by CancerCare. Most recently, Dr. Oratz is a Founding Board member of the American Jewish Medical Association, a new organization formed in the aftermath of October 7th to build an empowered community of Jewish healthcare professionals committed to combating discrimination and antisemitism, by promoting merit and excellence.
Leah Weinberg
Leah Weinberg is a previvor who has been involved with Sharsheret for many years. Shortly after her mother, Sandy Rolef, passed away in 2010, Leah learned she carried the BRCA1 mutation. She subsequently underwent a prophylactic double mastectomy with multiple surgeries, followed by a prophylactic hysterectomy a few years later.
Sharsheret holds a special place in Leah’s heart, not only for the support it provided during her own journey, but also for the guidance it gave her mother. When Sandy was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer at 49—before BRCA was widely recognized—a friend encouraged her to reach out to Sharsheret Founder Rochelle Shoretz A”H. Sandy and Rochelle spoke several times, and Leah remembers how deeply impressed her mother was with the organization.
Inspired by both her mother’s experience and her own, Leah has become a strong supporter of Sharsheret and its incredible work empowering women around the world. She lives on the Upper East Side of New York City with her husband, Joel Weinberg, and their two children, Jayden and Simon.
