Sharsheret Pink Day 2016

Sharsheret Pink Day 2016

Teaneck, New Jersey (February 12, 2016)- Sharsheret, Hebrew for “chain”, a national not-for-profit organization supporting young women and their families, of all Jewish backgrounds, facing breast cancer celebrated its 7th annual Sharsheret Pink Day around the world on Wednesday, February 10th. Sharsheret Pink Day empowers students to educate their peers about the increased risk of breast cancer and ovarian cancer in the Jewish community, and Sharsheret’s national programs.

The excitement surrounding Sharsheret Pink Day grows every year as thousands of students participate from colleges/universities, high schools, day schools, and Israel programs.  The students share a simple message with their peers – wear pink, raise awareness  in school and your community, and generate life-saving conversations among Jewish families who are at increased risk of hereditary breast cancer and ovarian cancer. This year, students creatively utilized their social media to spread the word about their efforts, and entered a short lip sync video competition which highlighted Sharsheret Pink Day. Each school location was encouraged to create its own SnapChat Geofilter to add to the pictures taken to further spread the word. Leveraging social media helped Sharsheret reach thousands of students, especially through our Facebook event page (http://on.fb.me/1QQxBWT), Twitter (@Sharsheret), and Instagram (Sharsheret1); students posted their pictures and videos on Sharsheret’s Pink Day event page and using the hashtag #SharsheretPinkDay2016.

“Each year student leaders become more creative in engaging their peers in Sharsheret Pink Day campus events. This year, students coordinated educational programs, pink bake sales, dance-a-thons, yoga events, and more. Students are proud to participate in Pink Day because they know they are making a difference,” said Sharsheret’s Director of Campus and Community Engagement Ellen Kleinhaus.  “We are grateful to the more than 1,000 students who help ensure that every Jewish family knows about Sharsheret, should they ever need us.”

Next year, Sharsheret Pink Day will be on Wednesday, February 8th.
