Sharsheret’s Partnership with the Basser Center for BRCA
Teaneck, New Jersey (April 14, 2016) – Sharsheret, Hebrew for “chain”, a national not-for-profit organization supporting young women and their families, of all Jewish backgrounds, facing breast cancer, is proud to announce its new partnership with the Basser Center for BRCA. The Basser Center for BRCA is the only center in the world solely devoted to BRCA-related cancers. It is a global hub, a place for families to become educated and receive genetic counseling, and simultaneously a center for breakthroughs and discoveries.
Together, Sharsheret and the Basser Center will work to educate and spread awareness to Jewish communities across the country. As a result of the partnership, more people will be educated about the increased risk of BRCA gene mutations in the Jewish Ashkenazi community.
The partnership includes funding from the Basser Center to support Sharsheret’s Teal and Pink Shabbat® program. Sharsheret’s Teal and Pink Shabbat program is designed to educate women and men about the increased risk of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer among Jewish families, the impact of breast and ovarian cancer on the Jewish community, and Sharsheret’s breast and ovarian cancer support programs for Jewish women and families of all backgrounds. Through Sharsheret’s Teal and Pink Shabbat program, participants are empowered to take action, share information, and support others. With support from the Basser Center, 30 of these programs will be possible nationally.
In an effort to spread awareness and increase education, the Basser Center and Sharsheret co-branded posters and resources. These resources will educate people about the BRCA gene mutation and the increased risk of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer in the Jewish community.
