Meaningful Takeaways From The Holiday Of Sukkot
Speaker: Sharsheret’s Clinical Supervisor Shera Dubitsky, MEd, MA
The holiday of Sukkot, the Feast of Tabernacles, provides meaningful messages for managing your life while living with cancer. The sukkah, the hut, is a temporary structure. Though there are similarities between all sukkahs, each family’s sukkah looks different. Some are made of wood, others are canvas, and each is decorated in a unique way. Similar to the sukkah, you all are united by your diagnosis, how you choose to live within the diagnosis is unique to you. Adorn your life based on what you find joyful, beautiful, and meaningful, not on others visions, expectations, or choices.
The sukkah walls may feel flimsy or like they are closing in on you. Remember that the ground beneath you is solid. Find your footing and you will feel steadier.
The holiday of Sukkot lasts for several days. During that time, the weather varies. Some days are rainy, some are cold, and others are warm and sunny. There will be different periods in your journey with cancer. Adjust and plan accordingly. Embrace the moment. Sometimes sunny days are followed by cloudiness, and the stormiest of days may reveal a peek of sunshine.
