Teaneck, New Jersey (March 7, 2012) – Sharsheret, a national not-for-profit organization supporting young women and their families, of all Jewish backgrounds, facing breast cancer, has published new resources and updated existing resources addressing the unique issues of young Jewish women living with or at risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer. The educational resource booklet series includes, Your Jewish Genes, Facing Breast Cancer as a Jewish Woman, and Facing Ovarian Cancer as a Jewish Woman, and can be shared with women and their families, health care professionals, and Jewish and women’s organizations nationwide.

“Sharsheret’s new booklets are written in a warm, compassionate manner reflective of the women and families who reach out to Sharsheret for support,” said Director of Operations Elana Silber. “Topics addressed in these booklets include the increased genetic risk for breast cancer and ovarian cancer in the Jewish community and unique cultural and psychosocial issues experienced by Jewish women and families facing breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Since its founding in 2001, Sharsheret has responded to more than 25,000 breast cancer inquiries, involved more than 1,500 peer supporters, and presented over 250 educational programs nationwide. Sharsheret supports young Jewish women and families facing breast cancer at every stage – before, during, and after diagnosis. We help women and families connect to our community in the way that feels most comfortable, taking into consideration their stage of life, diagnosis, or treatment, as well as their connection to Judaism.
