My connection to Sharsheret began in 2010, when, as an eight-year-old, I watched my mom participate in the NYC Triathlon for Team Sharsheret during its first year. I vividly recall making a poster to cheer her on and asking, “What is Sharsheret?” She explained, “Sharsheret is the organization I’m running for to raise money. It helps people we love during difficult times.” Though I couldn’t fully grasp the significance then, her words stayed with me.

Reflecting on that faint memory, I realize I had little understanding of the “help” my mom described about Sharsheret when I was a little girl. After just a few short weeks working at this incredible organization, I am now confident that I truly understand the profound impact Sharsheret has on so many lives.

My summer internship at Sharsheret has been transformative. Since the day I arrived, they’ve welcomed me with open arms. I’ve gained invaluable insights from each team member, whose commitment to their work is palpable. Their dedication stems from a deep belief in Sharsheret’s mission. They taught me the power of listening, the importance of checking in during tough times, and how vital it is to help women feel their best amid adversity.

As I look back on my summer and the work I’ve done, one takeaway stands out: Sharsheret excels at anticipating the unthinkable. To the Sharsheret team, Sharsheret is more than just the place they work; it’s the place where they form connections and provide care to anyone who comes their way. Truly embodying the meaning of the word Sharsheret – chain – the Sharsheret team links together , whether it be with each other or those in need of their services, and naturally these strong links enable them to think of every minute detail a person might need. They go above and beyond to celebrate even the smallest joys, remembering everyone’s birthday and frequently checking in with a supportive “Good luck today.” or “Thinking of you” text before a caller’s big appointment. Sharsheret’s care extends not just to the individual, but to their entire family. They’ve created detailed booklets for caregivers and ensure that children aren’t overlooked by including their favorite toys and games in the “Busy Box.” Sharsheret’s newest initiative, “YAD,” is specifically designed to support young adults grappling with the impacts of having a parent diagnosed with cancer. Because of the YAD program, young adults don’t have to go through this struggle alone. Additionally, they understand that even survivorship comes with mixed emotions and challenges. For survivors, Sharsheret has resources to guide individuals through these difficulties. Sharsheret also recognizes that while things like lace-top wigs, cold capping, and nipple tattooing might not be top of mind for women battling cancer, they are essential for empowering women to feel like themselves again—something that many wouldn’t even think to ask for. A central theme of Sharsheret’s work is their commitment to going beyond the expected.

Before starting my summer internship, I was uncertain about my future career path. But after working at Sharsheret, I now know that it’s possible to truly love what you do, to go to work every day with a smile, and, most importantly, to choose a path that helps and empowers people daily. There’s no such thing as a “bad day at the office” at Sharsheret, because each day, the staff is saving and improving lives. After working closely with the clinical team, I’m no longer uncertain about my path—I know that I want to work with people and support them during times of need.

I fell in love with Sharsheret and the everlasting impact they provide on a daily basis. I am forever grateful for my experience at Sharsheret.
