Hosting a teal and pink Shabbat is an opportunity for young adults to educate their peers about the impact of hereditary cancer on men and women, breast cancer, and ovarian cancer. Tips for a Successful Teal and Pink Shabbat Program
Designate a chair/s (include yourself!) and build a committee of 5-10. Pick the activities that are right for your campus. If you need help thinking of activities and a schedule, Sharsheret is here to help!
Check your campus calendar to schedule a date, and find a free Shabbat! Remember that September is ovarian cancer awareness month, October is breast cancer awareness month, and February is the month of Pink Day. When you have a date, let us know so we can promote your event and post on our website!
Partner with other campus organizations and reserve a central location on campus for the event based on expected number of participants, table size, and check-in. If you have a Chabad On Campus, Hillel International, Alpha Epsilon Phi Sorority Chapter, health group/society, or another breast cancer or ovarian cancer support group, consider partnering or inviting them to the event. Also, think out of the box! If you have friends who you think may be interested, invite them also!
When planning the event remember to think about budget; which clubs or students can sponsor the supplies. Consider if you want to add a fundraising component to your event.
Publicize and invite friends with captivating fliers, emails, and social media posts. Write a short post, send a vlog, and share the pictures from your event for Sharsheret’s website.
Invite a local breast cancer or ovarian cancer survivor to share their story. We may be bale to help you find a speaker. If you know any students who have been affected by breast or ovarian cancer, reach out to these students to see if they would be comfortable sharing.
Tables: Place Teal/pink tablecloths, napkins, balloons, paper flowers, educational resources and conversation starters on each table.
Food: Pink challah, teal/ pink drinks, and teal/pink desserts (e.g., cupcakes, jelly beans, watermelon)
Polaroid ribbon picture wall: A great way to raise money and to decorate is to buy a polaroid camera. Take pictures of students holding empowering signs, and create a picture wall in the shape of a ribbon. Students can buy raffle tickets for the camera, and at the end of Shabbos a winner is picked!
