As a breast oncologist, Dr. Comander has witnessed the struggles her patients face during and following completion of primary cancer treatment, and she is passionate about improving the overall health and well-being of breast cancer survivors through lifestyle interventions. In collaboration with Dr. Frates, she launched the PAVING the Path to Wellness Program lifestyle medicine program for breast cancer survivors. She has co-authored PAVING Your Path Through Breast Cancer and Beyond which focuses on the role of evidence-based lifestyle interventions for cancer survivors.
Dr. Comander was the first oncologist to serve on the Board of Directors of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, and she was honored to be the first oncologist who has received the Fellows designation of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine.
Dr. Comander practices what she preaches, having run marathons, including 13 consecutive Boston Marathons to date, with the goal to improve the lives of those with a diagnosis of cancer. She views running marathons as a metaphor for life, and her favorite running mantra is “Every mile out there is a gift and every finish line is a gift” (Amby Burfoot, winner of the 1968 Boston Marathon).
